Angustiden Teeth – Pre-Megalodon

An angustiden shark tooth is a fossilized tooth from the extinct shark Otodus angustidens. It is a member of the megatooth shark family, which also includes the famous Megalodon. Angustiden shark teeth are characterized by their triangular crowns and small side cusps that are fully serrated. The serrations are very sharp and very well pronounced. The teeth can reach lengths of up to 5 inches. Otodus angustidens lived during the Oligocene and Miocene epochs, about 33 to 22 million years ago. It was a large shark, with adults reaching lengths of up to 11 meters (36 feet). The angustiden shark was a predator of large marine mammals, such as whales and seals. Angustiden shark teeth are found in many parts of the world, but they are especially common in South Carolina. This is because a fossil bed in South Carolina suggests that Otodus angustidens utilized the area as a birthing ground and nursery for their pups.

Angustiden Teeth (Pre-Megalodon)
1. What are Angustiden teeth?
- Angustiden teeth are fossils from a group of extinct sharks that predated the Megalodon. They are characterized by their narrow, elongated shape.
2. When did Angustiden sharks live?
- Angustiden sharks lived during the Oligocene epoch, which was approximately 33.9 to 28.4 million years ago.
3. How did Angustiden sharks compare to Megalodons?
- Angustiden sharks were generally smaller than Megalodons. While they were still formidable predators, they lacked the massive size and power of the Megalodon.
4. Where can I find Angustiden teeth?
- Angustiden teeth can be found in various locations around the world, especially in areas where ancient oceans once existed. Popular spots include:
- Coastal regions of North America (e.g., Florida, South Carolina)
- Morocco
- Indonesia
5. What is the value of an Angustiden tooth?
- The value of an Angustiden tooth depends on several factors, including:
- Size
- Condition (e.g., completeness, color)
- Provenance (where it was found)
Angustiden teeth can range in value from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars, depending on these factors.
6. Are Angustiden teeth rare?
- Angustiden teeth are less common than Megalodon teeth, but they are still relatively available. Larger and higher-quality specimens are more valuable.
7. Can I display an Angustiden tooth?
- Yes, you can display an Angustiden tooth. However, it’s important to handle it with care to avoid damaging it. Consider using a display case or stand to protect it from scratches and other damage.
