Megalodon teeth have been found in many different locations around the globe, including U.S. states such as California, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, and Maryland. Other countries include Mexico, Cuba, Chile, New Caledonia, Peru, Panama, Australia, England, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Morocco, Madagascar, and Indonesia. Their teeth can be found in phosphate mines, on beaches, and by diving in rivers and oceans. Some fossilized teeth have been found as large as 7 3/8 inches.

Why are there so many Megalodon teeth?

A single shark can lose an average of 20,000 teeth in its lifetime, with some species losing up to 50,000. On average, every 7–10 days, a new tooth moves forward, pushing the older one out. Over millions of sharks and millions of years, this has resulted in an enormous number of fossilized teeth. Sharks need constant replacement because they bite directly into bones, which often damages or dislodges their teeth.

How do I estimate the size of the Megalodon Shark by the tooth I have?

You can estimate the size of a Megalodon using a primary tooth (usually symmetrical top jaw tooth). On average, 1/8 inch of tooth length equals about 1 foot of shark length. For example, a 7-inch tooth would suggest a Megalodon about 56 feet long.
